Five Main Characteristics of WA201

Uses Okayama Selvedge Denim, a denim used by the world’s leading brands

Okayama cotton weaving has been around since the Edo Period. This means that the denim produced is made with the benefit of many years of experience and skills that have been passed down. The denim is produced in a way that doesn’t lend itself to mass production, using shuttle looms, which uses less tension, which means that the surface of the fabric is not always smooth and is uneven, which in regards to denim is a luxurious feel, and is used by many leading Western brands.

Denim that is woven on shuttle looms is known as selvedge denim, and when it has a red thread running along the edge of the denim to stop fraying, it is redline selvedge.

The reason that Selvedge Denim is high quality and expensive is mainly due to the time that goes into making it. The shuttle loom works at a much slower speed, and in order to make one sheet of denim, it takes more than 5 times than it would take to make shuttleless denim. As well as this, in recent years, shuttleless looms have progressed even further, meaning that computers can run the machines without problem, while with shuttle looms, highly skilled workers are needed to make sure that the looms run smoothly, and make a clean weave. The shuttleless looms can weave denim at about 150cm width, while shuttle looms are constricted to about 80cm, so shuttleless looms can make twice as much fabric in one swoop. That combined with the time it takes to actually weave the fabric means that it is a costly product, and contributes to its price.

The Wa-Denim jeans uses this Okayama Selvedge denim, combining it with polyurethane to help the material stretch better, meaning that it is authentic selvedge denim with superior comfort!

Tango Chirimen, the silk fabric made in the largest production area of kimono fabrics, Tango, Kyoto

In the Tango region, in Kyoto Prefecture, silk that is produced here makes up about 70% of all kimono silk made in Japan, and is known widely as Tango Chirimen.

Tango Chirimen has an uneven surface, with indents known as shibo, which are seen as being a mark of high quality. These are made due to the thread used and special weaving process. The fabric is supple and rich in colour, which when combined with Kyo Yuzen and other dyeing methods is used as a fabric for kimonos.

Wa-Denim uses Tango Chirimen that has been dyed using the special process known as Kyo Yuzen for original patterns.

Kyo Yuzen, A special dyeing method that is representative of kimono fabric dyeing in Kyoto.

Kyo Yuzen has a long history of over 300 years, and is a beloved traditional Japanese craft, with it being one of the 3 main yuzen dyeing techniques in Japan. It is known for its pattern dyeing, and is a world famous dyeing technique.

It is able to produce various elegant and beautiful patterns, and at the time when nobles and aristocrats lived in Kyoto, it was treasured by these upper classes.

Wa-Denim looks to help preserve this beautiful dyeing technique while not being too gaudy, and we have selected a traditional ringed pattern and redesigned the pattern so that it works well in both business and casual settings, mixing with any various shirts and so on.

The Shippo-mon pattern, a traditional Japanese pattern that links circles endlessly

The shippo-mon which is written as 七宝紋 in Japanese, is a long used pattern that features overlapping and intertwined circles. It is said that the pattern is unending spreading in all four directions. It also refers to the Buddhist 7 (七 in Japanese) treasures (宝 in Japanese), gold, silver lapis lazuli, quartz, coral, agate, and giant clam shell.

Another interpretation of the design is that of fate, with all the circles connected, which is said to be a good omen of happiness, harmony, and good connections between others. It is seen by others to remind others of the value of the connection between others and that they have the same value as the previously mentioned seven treasures.

For this pair of jeans, using the shippo-mon pattern as a base with the red circle found in our logo (that is a stylised version of 和) incoorporated to create a new shippo-mon pattern, we hope that they help to bring good new connections whenever you're wearing them.

A three-dimensional cut that helps to give comfort while also contouring to the legs perfectly!

The designers of the Okayama denim have made a pattern that makes the jeans conform to the body while also giving a comfortable fit. As well as this, the jeans have been calculated down to the smallest detail, with the shape and size of the back pocket, the position and thickness of the stitch, and so on to make sure that the jeans are super comfortable to wear, while also looking stylish.

The front belt loops and the patch found on the back uses the tango chirimen Kyo Yuzen dyed silk.

We think that the jeans can be worn with most tops and shirts while looking good but also having a unique character to them!

100% Silk tango chirimen fabric is dyed using Kyo Yuzen and used as belt loops and silk patch.

Care

Due to the transferable nature of denim indigo dye, do not wash the product with other items to avoid any color transfer.

We apply an Aptness treatment to give a strong water repellent finish to the KIMONO fabric. Although in some cases, the KIMONO fabric may have the denim indigo dye transferred when washed or dried during manufacturing, the transferred dye can be removed or become less noticeable with further washing. We appreciate your understanding of this product specific nature.
